PIGG’S PEAK – Around KaNcesi, they say manure is as precious as gold because it is a product in high demand.

It is for this reason that when a truck full of fertiliser overturned, residents did not waste time as within a few minutes, they swarmed the truck for purposes of looting. Some also allegedly stole other items from the overturned truck while the driver was severely injured when the accident occurred. The truck had been heading to a nearby hardware store for delivery but it overturned about a kilometre away from its destination. Some of the looters did not hide the reason they needed the fertiliser but openly said it was not a secret that KaNcesi was known for dagga. KaNcesi is usually the central point for dagga from Nyonyane, Maphalaleni, Nkomazi or Maguga before it is transported to neighbouring South Africa (SA). The area is under Nkhaba Inkhundla.

The driver is said to have lost control of the truck as it was going downhill. He is said to have tried to control it but failed to do so and the vehicle veered off the road and overturned. It landed over an embankment just before the driver was flung out of the vehicle. The driver is said to have sustained serious injuries and was reportedly unconscious when the residents began to loot. He was later taken away by paramedics from the Pigg’s Peak Government Hospital. Residents allegedly ransacked and stole all the bags before police officers arrived.
Though KaNcesi is close to the Pigg’s Peak Police Station, it is under the jurisdiction of officers in Mbabane.

As police officers arrived, some of the looters could be seen fleeing from the area but hid some of the fertiliser  bags behind huge boulders to avoid being seen by officers. Police officers Siza Magongo and Simangele Simelane were at the scene to record statements regarding the actual events that led to the accident. Magongo said it appeared that the vehicle crashed when the driver lost control of the truck. He also confirmed that the driver was rushed to hospital but could not give details of his condition.
