MANZINI – The march in the busy Manzini City was so serious so much that it caught the eye of a legislator.

Nkilongo Member of Parliament (MP) Timothy Myeni couldn’t resist the struggle songs that were sung by the marches as he sang along and danced after coming across them as he went about his errands. The MP, who was near Standard Bank main branch in Manzini when the striking civil servants marched, was seen dancing to the song which was sung by the marching workers. Upon seeing the MP dancing to their song, the civil servants clapped hands while others invited him to join their march.

Singing

However, the MP did not join the march but he was seen singing the marchers’ song and raised his fist in the air, something which is usually done by protestors when singing or delivering speeches. It is worth noting that before the strike started, MPs told Prime Minister (PM) Ambrose Mandvulo Dlamini to send a select committee to looked into the issue of civil servants in order to prevent them from engaging in the protest action. Some MPs even said they believed government had money to adjust the public service workers’ salaries. At the busy town, the civil servants made it known to police officers that they should stay 100 metres away.

The police officers were deployed to ensure peace, protect life and property during the workers’ march in Manzini yesterday. Even an officer who was taking a video of the march had to zoom the action from 100 metres away. They said they understood and appreciated the presence of the police during their march but as per the Code of Good Practice and Public Order Act of 2018, they should be at least 100 metres away from their action. During the march, the union leaders would from time to time remind the law enforcers about the distance. In fact, they called upon those who posed as workers to excuse them. They also raised this concern with the Manzini Police Regional Commissioner, Senior Assistant Commissioner Simon Mlilo.

Verses

On another note, Bible verses were the order of the day as civil servants marched yesterday in the busy Manzini City.
