LOBAMBA – “I have found love, comfort and hope,” said Thuli Malinga (42) from Nhlangano, after she was baptised  as a Jehovah’s Witness at Somhlolo National Stadium yesterday.

“I now have new hope for everlasting life and it’s something that I look forward to,” she said. Malinga, who has a disability, was one of the 55 Witnesses who were baptized during the three-day ‘Love Never Fails’ convention of Jehovah’s Witnesses. She started studying the bible with Jehovah’s Witnesses two years ago. “I have found a new purpose in life and I am really happy,” she said. Baptism is always a highlight in Jehovah’s Witnesses assemblies and large conventions. The baptism ceremony began at about noon, starting with a bible talk by Sicelo Kunene.

Kunene encouraged the baptismal candidates to always imitate Jesus Christ in everything they do; in their thoughts, speech and actions. He encouraged them to develop qualities such as kindness, compassion, perseverance and above all, unfailing love in tandem with the convention theme. He warned the congregants that Satan would target them because of their declared status as new Jehovah’s Witnesses and assured them that they had a huge family of other Jehovah’s Witnesses to rely on for support. “But most importantly, you should rely on Jehovah,” he said. That’s what Malinga did two years ago, when she decided to start the process of officially becoming one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. “To get baptised during the convention was the best thing for me,” she said. “It’s about the love that I have for Jehovah-that’s what matters most,” she said.

She said her belief in Jehovah has made her a happy person. Kunene told the baptismal candidates that they were joining over 8.5 million Jehovah’s Witnesses worldwide. “To be baptised, candidates are expected to have a basic understanding of the Bible’s teachings, how to apply those teachings, and the responsibilities they will have to their brothers and sisters in the organisation,” said Jehovah’s Witnesses local spokesperson Lucky Dlamini.
