SITEKI – They were warned but they did not listen.

A group of women who were recruited into the Global Dream Network (GDN) pyramid scheme have opened a case with the police after losing over E10 000. The pyramid scheme has reportedly collapsed and the women are now demanding a refund from the agents who recruited them into the scheme. However, the agents are reportedly ducking and avoiding the disgruntled women, most of whom are employed by a leading shopping outlet in Manzini. The administrators of the pyramid scheme are also nowhere to be seen, lamented one of the women. “These people robbed us because they took our money and we did not get anything in return. They are the ones who benefitted,” said one of the women.

The women have since approached the police and opened cases against the agents of the pyramid scheme. “We know these people hence we approached the police. All we want is for them to refund us our money,” said one of the women. Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Phindile Vilakati confirmed that some women had approached the police after losing monies in a pyramid scheme. She added that police were investigating the matter. Recently, local media reported that the GDN pyramid scheme, which was popular among social media users, had collapsed.

It was also reported that a group of students from one of the tertiary institutions in the country was behind the pyramid scheme. People recruited into the GDN pyramid scheme would be required to pay a certain amount, usually E300, as joining fee. For them to get dividends, they would have to recruit a particular number of people, according to the terms of the scheme.
Potential members were promised amounts (dividends) ranging from E1 000 to over E10 000. Popular social media platforms, including Facebook and WhatsApp, were used to recruit members but of late, recruiters were making calls and also approaching potential members in person.
