SEX WORKERS WILL STEAL OUR JOBS - TAXI MEN

MANZINI – Taxi drivers are under the apprehension that their jobs will be under threat should Vision 2022 Ministries Eswatini’s proposed programme be a success.

This was expressed by a handful of taxi drivers during random interviews yesterday around Manzini.
This comes after Themba Magagula, Vision 2022 Ministries Eswatini Executive Director, announced on Tuesday that the organisation was on a mission to transmute sex workers into being sensible citizens through a three-phase rehabilitative programme.

The programme would entail securing driver’s licences for the ladies of the night and offering them job opportunities to ferry drink-drivers from bars across the country to their respective destinations.

implemented

However, a number of taxi men are of the view that should the programme be implemented, their jobs would be in jeopardy.
The taxi men are of the view that the catalyst for the preference of women over them by the imbibers would be perpetuated by the possibility of sexual favours they might obtain.

“Men have a soft spot for women, as a result, it is beyond any reasonable doubt that our customers will ditch us and use their services with an intention to gain sexual favours in return,” explained  one of the taxi men.

He said they were crossing their fingers and praying that such a programme be unsuccessful. On another note, Magagula submitted, when explaining the rehabilitative programme for the sex workers, that some of the women would become kombi conductors and truck drivers.

eligible

A fair share of kombi conductors were probed if the sex workers would be eligible to thrive as kombi conductors, to which they responded by saying such was nothing but a fairytale.

Their point of argument sprang from the fact that their line of work was one that was cumbersome for the fairer sex.
They said one had to be tough in order to survive as a kombi conductor given the fact that they, from time to time, had to deal with stubborn people who always gave them a hard time.

“Often times we have drunk people who are stubborn enough to refuse to pay transportation fees and we have to use force to convince them to pay,” said one kombi conductor.

The programme will not only present job opportunities to the sex workers but will play a pivotal role in rehabilitating them to become conscientious citizens of the country, according to Magagula.
