MBABANE – Three Cameroonian women, who are accused of being sex workers, are stuck in the country after their passports were seized by the police.
Their passports were taken after they had landed at the King Mswati III International Airport.

According to the police officers, the three were suspected to be en route to South Africa, to allegedly practise the sex work trade.
Akwo Sonia Bih, Ida Mua Ndasi Doh and Estelle Membe Sakwe, who are currently booked in at Mozambique Hotel in Manzini, claimed they were interrogated for 45 minutes.

During the interrogation, they were allegedly branded as sex workers, a trade that is illegal in the kingdom.
The police reportedly told them that they had a hunch that they were sex workers and someone from Cameroon would come to fetch and assist them to escape into the Republic of South Africa, for purposes of being sex workers.

The trio, however, claimed to have been in the country as tourists.

Application

They have since filed an urgent application at the High Court where they are seeking an order directing the Ministry of Home Affairs and the national commissioner of police to forthwith release their passports.

In her founding affidavit, Bih informed the court that on or about June 16, 2019, along with Doh and Sakwe, they arrived into the Kingdom of Eswatini through King Mswati III International Airport, at about 4:50pm.  She said upon arrival, their passports were not stamped but were confiscated by the police officers.

“They informed us that they were going to interrogate us to see if our purpose of being in the Kingdom of Eswatini was genuine or not.  I must mention that even our host, Dumisani Mngomezulu, was already waiting for our arrival and he was also taken in for interrogation,” alleged Bih.
According to Bih, they then proceeded to the police station at Sikhuphe (King Mswati III International Airport) where they were interrogated for about 45 minutes.
