MANZINI – Will this week see the government operations grind to a halt?

This question follows that public sector associations (PSAs) resolved, a fortnight ago, to petition the administration over a litany of issues. The PSAs will meet today to formulate logistics to their resolve. The Swaziland National Association of Teachers (SNAT) Secretary General, Sikelela Dlamini, said the various unions would meet over logistics and finalising their stance. PSAs comprise of the National Public Service and Allied Workers Union (NAPSAWU), SNAT, Swaziland Democratic Nurses Union (SWADNU) and the Swaziland Government Accountants Personnel (SNAGAP).

Wise

Dlamini said; “It would be wise to have the petition this week while many of our members would be financially stable in order to commute to Mbabane.” The decision to have the PSAs collectively petition government came after teachers had decided to postpone their visit to the capital city, Mbabane. The union decided to involve other PSAs so that their cause could have a wider impact and get the desired results from the administration. Dlamini said their major concern in petitioning government emanated from the fact that since the financial year for government began, there had been no negotiations on the cost-of-living-adjustment (CoLA) for civil servants. The negotiations are usually held at the Ministry of Public Service and participants are the government negotiation team (GNT) and the PSAs. They are known as the joint negotiation forum (JNF). Dlamini said they had sent correspondence to the Ministry of Public Service seek

Resolved

He said; “Our members resolved to abandon classes and petition government to drop charges against the union’s president Mbongwa Dlamini and that government should reopen the negotiation table for CoLA.”
