MBABANE – Yet another headache for government, specifically the Ministry of Health.

Government is being sued for over E4.3 million by two women who had their uteruses allegedly removed by doctors without their consent. A uterus is the organ in the lower body of a woman or female mammal where babies are conceived and in which they gestate before birth.

The two women were operated on at different health institutions. Nozipho Ngwenya (30) of Lufafa in northern Hhohho had her uterus removed at the Pigg’s Peak Government Hospital while that of Cebisile Faith Mncina of Nkoyoyo was reportedly removed at Mbabane Government Hospital.
Ngwenya was reportedly eight months pregnant and the operation resulted in the loss of her unborn baby.

Giving the background of the matter, Ngwenya narrated that sometime in September 30, 2017, she was conspicuously heavily pregnant and she went to Pigg’s Peak Government Hospital for medical help and attention.

“I was not feeling well as I was at that time about eight months pregnant and was suffering from a bout of flue which comprised of coughing, severe chest pains, radiation on back, general body pain as well as aching of the joints,” said Ngwenya.

She submitted that at the hospital, she consulted with Doctor Lema, who allegedly without conducting any scientific examination, admitted her to the hospital. According to the plaintiff (Ngwenya), Dr Lema promptly referred her to the maternity ward where he (Dr Lema) administered an injection on her which he told her was a vaccine for the flue. Dr Lema, according to Ngwenya, also informed her that the injection would help stop the coughing as well as the chest pains.

“Soon after being injected, I experienced excruciating pain in my abdomen which felt like labour pains and I was neglected for the whole night without being attended to by any health officials within the hospital.  This was despite the fact that I was visibly in pain and crying out for help,” alleged the plaintiff.

Pains

She went on to state that she did not expect pains of this nature since she knew she was not due for delivery.
Ngwenya alleged that the following morning, October 1, 2017, she discovered that she was lying in a pool of blood. She averred that notwithstanding drawing attention of the nurses to this fact, they all turned a blind eye until on or about 3pm where the nurses, on the doctor’s  instruction, came to conduct an ultra sound pregnancy scan on her.

She said after the scan, she was told that the child’s heartbeat had stopped.
“After the scan, I started bleeding profusely and without being given any explanation by the doctor and/or without my consent having been sought or granted, the doctor, with the assistance of the nurses, began administering some gel on me, gave me certain tablets to take and further administered another injection on me,” alleged Ngwenya.

She asserted that pursuant to this, she started experiencing severe labour pains and she later learnt from the conversation among the nurses that the whole process was meant to induce her into labour.

Ngwenya pointed out that the hospital’s unsanctioned efforts to induce her into labour were in vain as they did not achieve the desired results other than to subject her to gruesome pain and suffering. Ngwenya claimed that her condition continued to deteriorate and on October 2, 2017, she was referred to Mbabane Government Hospital for another scan after which she was referred back to Pigg’s Peak Government Hospital into the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
