NHLANGANO – A Form II pupil bravely fought two armed robbers and further disarmed them of their gun.

The incident happened during the wee hours of Sunday shortly after the 19-year-old teenager had left a local nightclub to meet his girlfriend, who was coming to assist him with money for transport to take him home after a night out with the boys. The teenager, who goes to one of the schools in the outskirts of Nhlangano, will not be named for ethical reasons.

In an interview with police officers, the young lad said the two thugs pounced on him and his girlfriend shortly after midnight while they were walking back towards the nightclub, which is situated close to the Nhlangano Industrial Site.

He said they were about to reach their destination when two unknown men emerged from a forest and pointed a gun at them, demanding cash and cellphones. The teenager said maternal instinct forced him to fight like a possessed person as one of the thugs threatened to shoot him.

The presence of the girlfriend also somehow gave the young lad the strength to fight back. At the same time, he said his girlfriend bravely put up a fight which gave him a chance to run to the nearby nightclub to regroup with his friends who were still enjoying themselves inside the entertainment joint. He said upon relating his ordeal, his friends decided to embark on a search for the culprits straight away.

They were able to get hold of the muggers after searching around the same forest, where they had initially emerged from during the attack. However, the cornered hooligans once again produced their gun but it failed them.

This gave the pupil and his friends a chance to fight. The pupil told investigators that he managed to wrestle the man who was wielding the gun, resulting in it falling. His other friends joined in and hit both men who later fled the scene.

Once the dust had settled, the pupil went back to attend to his girlfriend who was writhing in pain from the initial attack by the robbers, before they later decided to take the gun to the police. A manhunt was thereafter launched by Nhlangano police. Police discovered that the two suspects from Mbukwane had stolen a licensed firearm, a 9mm pistol, from a resident before proceeding to rob another community member of his cellphone and cash.
They were eventually located by the police around Nhlangano on Wednesday afternoon. The suspects, identified as Sibongumenzi Simelane (21) and Sizwe Lukhele (21),  were slapped with two counts of attempted robbery, one of robbery and another one, which was in relation to the theft of the firearm. They made their initial appearance at the Nhlangano Magistrates Court yesterday.
The matter is pending in court.
