MANZINI – Pupils carry schoolbooks in plastic bags in a forced act of ‘transparency’ following the proliferation of drugs at Manzini Nazarene High School. The school administration has had to change its normal rules to stay vigilant after finding stashes of dagga stuffed in matchboxes.

The matchboxes were retrieved from school bags of two pupils last Thursday.
The matter is now a subject of investigation by the Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS) after the school administration roped them in to assist in the matter as dagga possession without a permit remains illegal in the country.

The school, which promotes strict Christian values has a huge number of boarders and fewer day scholars.
It was gathered that teachers noticed unusual behaviour among the pupils and decided to investigate as to what could be making the scholars act in a strange manner.

That is when they searched their schools bags and found the illegal herb.

Matchboxes

Allegations were made to the effect that three pupils, who were day scholars, were found with matchboxes, with two of them containing dagga.
It is suspected that the day scholars smuggle the dagga into the school premises to sell to the boarders.
One pupil who was found with an empty matchbox was warned but not sent home.

His two other counterparts were told to come back with their parents to discuss the issue.
The discovery of the dagga-stuffed matchboxes was made in Form 1 and II classes.

As a result, the school’s instruction was that all Form I and II boys were forbidden from carrying books in backpacks until the impasse had been resolved.
Instead, they now carry their school stuff in plastic bags.

It was also said that juice bottles were also restricted as it was unknown what could be contained inside them.
Some parents said they were distraught by the recent announcement of the school compelling pupils to carry books in plastic bags.
They complained that the books could easily get lost.

“It is a fact that boys don’t like carrying plastic bags, so the next thing is that they will carry books by hand. If they do so, then it is almost inevitable that they will lose the books,” said a parent.
