MBABANE – Parents who wanted their children to attend school in the capital city have slim chances as spaces have been confirmed to be full.

As schools will be opening tomorrow, admission spaces have been rendered full by head teachers, who confirmed that there were no spaces available anymore.
Mater Dolorosa High School Head Teacher John Ngwenya said spaces were filled and they were waiting for those who had not shown up.
“On paper, Form IV spaces are filled by pupils who did interviews and got accepted,” said Ngwenya.

He further mentioned, however, that some pupils still did not show up to indicate that they were coming back to do their Form IV at the school. Ngwenya said this was quite the norm for some who were still looking for spaces in better performing schools. The head teacher mentioned that they would then return to the school (Mater Dolorosa) when they were rejected. When he was questioned if parents could still come to apply for their children, he said that would depend if the pupils who had been admitted did not return for their spaces.

Moreover, when this publication visited Mater Dolorosa Primary School, it found that the head teacher was not around. However, notices pinned on the school’s administration block walls confirmed that spaces were already full as they were written, “Kute indzawo, meaning there were no more spaces.
Woodlands High was another school in the capital city which had no spaces. Head teacher Lizzy Dlamini confirmed that there were no spaces available in both Form I and IV.

Other schools which were confirmed to have no spaces for admission were St Mark’s and KaBoyce High School. These were already full in the beginning of the year, and it was long established that they admitted pupils last year.
However, parents said they were saddened that most of the schools only accepted pupils with good grades.
“How can I take my child to a rural school whereas she has always been based in the urban areas? Am I not killing the child? Government needs to step in and help us. The schools seem to only focus on pupils who obtained Merit and First Class passes, what about Second and Third Class passes?” lamented one parent.
