MANZINI - The woman who was arrested for allegedly bashing her stepdaughter with a broom stick will be spending the next seven days in custody after she was denied bail by the court.

The accused person, Hlobisile Dlamini (21) of Buhleni, made a court appearance before Magistrate Philisiwe Simelane after she was arrested and charged with contravening the Children Protection and Welfare Act of 2012.
The accused person, who was supported by some family members, including her lover, who is the father of the child, appeared in court and kept on making statements which did not make sense.

Dlamini mentioned that they had recorded statements at the Social Welfare offices and did not understand why she was not admitted to bail by the court.

Denied

This was after the court had denied her bail on the basis that the Social Welfare Department was still to compile a report on the incident and hand it over to the prosecution.

“Investigations on the matter have not been concluded yet and the Social Welfare Department is still going to file its report,” the public prosecutor said.
The charge sheet states that Dlamini, at Enkonga, near Mafutseni assaulted *Titia (9) with a stick several times on the face and all over the body. The incident allegedly occurred on Saturday while the child’s father was not present.

The child’s bad injuries were discovered by a kombi driver who had noticed that the girl was walking in a strange manner, only to discover that she had been severely assaulted.

It turned out that the nine-year-old girl had been subjected to severe physical assault, allegedly by her stepmother.
The woman was questioned by the police, charged with contravening the Children Protection and Welfare Act and further locked up by the Mafutseni police.
Police officers were ordered to take the child to the Social Welfare offices for interviews together with the child’s father and biological mother.

Conversed

Upon arrival at the offices, the father of the child, Linda Mkhabela, was found seated outside while police conversed with officers from the Social Welfare Department.
He cried hysterically when narrating the story of his lover who had been arrested by the police for ‘disciplining’ his child.

“I am not crying because I am defending her actions, I am just saddened by the fact that there is no one currently taking care of me and the children while she is locked up by the police.

“On several occasions, I had ordered the same child to apologise to my girlfriend as she is wayward  and all along, I had assumed things were normal as she loved, took good care of them and further cooked for them.

She loved them as their mother, however, it was unfortunate that this incident later unfolded,” Mkhabela said on Monday.
Dlamini was whisked in a police van to Mawelawela Correctional facility.
She is expected back in court next Tuesday pending the Social Welfare report and setting of her trial date.
