STEPMUM ARRESTED FOR BASHING GIRL (9)

MANZINI – A kombi driver became a hero when he noticed a girl walking in a strange manner, only to find that she had been severely assaulted, allegedly by her stepmother.

The kombi driver had the courage to approach the young girl while she alighted from the vehicle and enquired about her ‘funny’ walk.
It turned out that the nine-year-old girl had been subjected to severe physical assault, allegedly by her stepmother.

The driver of the kombi, which was from Mafutseni to Manzini, is said to have also seen the bad marks on the child’s back and noted that she walked with difficulty. She was travelling with her younger brother.

“The child was in so much pain and the kombi driver managed to notice that. He stopped the kombi and approached the child, and pulled up her clothing.
After questioning the child, the police were contacted and they later arrested the stepmother, who had severely assaulted the child with a broomstick all over the body,” a well-placed source alleged.

The woman was questioned by the police and later charged with contravening the Child Protection and Welfare Act, and further locked up at the Mafutseni Police Station.

It is suspected that the assault happened when the girl, together with her brother, had visited their father over the school holidays.
The woman, who will not be named for now pending her court appearance, was taken to court yesterday.

However, arresting officers were turned back as a Social Welfare report, which had to be part of the statements in the docket was missing.
The cops were ordered to take the child to the Social Welfare offices for interviews, together with the child’s father and biological mother.
Upon arrival at the offices yesterday, the father of the child, Linda Mkhabela, was found seated outside while police conversed with officers from the Social Welfare department.
