MANZINI – A Mafutseni Indvuna Yenkhundla 2018 elections contender and his campaign manager (galajane) have been arrested for the theft of copper cables belonging to EEC and EPTC.

The Mafutseni police arrested the two suspects, Sibusiso Ngcamphalala (30) and his former campaign manager, Mthokozisi Thabiso Mamba (28), both of Timbutini.

Information gathered from statements submitted in court is that the copper cables, valued at E23 000, were stolen from Eswatini Posts and Telecommunications Corporation EPTC) and Eswatini Electricity Company (EEC) poles.

The police said they strongly suspected that a former employee of EEC was also part of the syndicate, as the copper was stolen from the top of the electricity poles, something which was risky and could even lead to death.

“Someone is most definitely doing the job for them, climbing up the poles to eventually steal the copper and we suspect that the person doing all the work once worked for the company, and knows all the tactics of removing such,” a well-placed source said.

The accused persons allegedly stole the copper cables, measuring about160 metres, in two places, Vulamehlo and Thulwane.
It was found in their respective places shortly before they were arrested by the police.
During their court appearance, the accused persons who appeared before Magistrate Nelisiwe Hlophe, requested for bail and added that they had families and children who solely depended on them.

Remand

They were each admitted to E10 000 bail by the court and ordered not to evade remand hearings or trial.
They were further ordered not to interfere with Crown witnesses or commit a similar offence while out on bail.
