PIGG’S PEAK – Despite coming from a poor family which cannot afford to pay his school fees, this did not stop Mncedisi Magagula from attaining 94 per cent and being among the top 10 performers in the country.

Mncedisi wrote the Junior Certificate (JC) exams at Mpofu High School, which is situated near Buhleni. It is not the first time he has performed well as he was number 13 in the country in the Grade VII results at Mpofu Primary School. Mncedisi is under government’s Orphaned and Vulnerable Children (OVC) programme. He said his mother was unemployed and sickly and that his father died in 2002. “I won’t be able to afford uniform or shoes but this won’t keep me from returning to school,” said Mncedisi.

Uniforms

He said his biggest challenge would be acquiring school uniform. Mpofu High School is one of the many schools which are very remote and not easily accessible using public transport. In fact, even on a dry day, transport to the school is scarce and pupils are often forced to walk long distances. Despite the challenges, the school performed well and one of their pupils was among the top 10 in the country with an aggregate of 94 per cent. The head teacher of the school, Jerome Msweli, said he was pleased with the performance of his school and also attributed this to teamwork among teachers.

He also highlighted that the school had challenges such as scarcity of transport but that parents had to engage transport operators. Msweli said the transport had to adjust the schedule to ensure pupils arrived on time and that they were also transported back to their homes in time. He said though the challenge still existed, it was better now than in previous years.
