NHLANGANO – In a sudden twist that could bring closure to the bereaved family, the police officer accused of killing his girlfriend has surrendered to authorities.

Constable Sibusiso Shongwe turned himself in at the Shiselweni Serious Crimes Unit in Nhlangano, on Sunday night, over allegations of killing his partner Lindokuhle Mlangeni, following an argument on Boxing Day. Shongwe (30) surrendered at about 9pm on Sunday in the company of two relatives. According to sources, Shongwe’s elder sister and Zombodze Emuva Member of Parliament (MP) Muzi Kunene, were instrumental in convincing him to hand himself over to authorities after being on the run for about four days. Shongwe’s sister had called him at around 6pm on the same day, asking to see him. She eventually located him at Sihhohweni area, where she fetched him while in the company of the lawmaker.

Accompanied

The MP could neither deny nor confirm that he accompanied Shongwe to the Nhlangano Police Station on Sunday night, when approached by this publication yesterday. However, Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Phindile Vilakati, confirmed that the police officer was accompanied by relatives when he surrendered to authorities.
It was earlier reported that Mlangeni, a nurse by profession, was strangulated and killed during a domestic dispute at her rented flat which is situated at New Town in Hlatikhulu, on Boxing Day. Her unresponsive body was found wrapped in a towel inside the flat.

The following day, her boyfriend, Constable Shongwe, was listed as a wanted person by the police. This was after he had disappeared from the Matsapha Police Academy, where he had been attending a workshop. At the time, police believed that Shongwe’s vanishing act after the suspicious death of his lover was no coincidence. Mlangeni was employed as a nurse at the Hlatikhulu Government Hospital at the time of her death, while Shongwe was attached to the Traffic Department at the Hlatikhulu Police Station. Shongwe had been seen in the company of his girlfriend at her rented flat on the fateful day. Information gathered was that the couple shared the same flat after the police officer moved in and somehow abandoned his allocated house at the local police camp.
