MBABANE – Being without power seems to have seriously irked some customers of Eswatini Electricity Company (EEC) in the past couple of weeks.

This is because the company has reported two incidents where customers threatened their staff with guns. The latest incident happened last week when an aggrieved customer stormed the company’s offices at Hluthi and demanded to speak to management.

Upset

Apparently, the customer was upset that he had been without power for some time and the company’s personnel had not attended to him. The irked customer is said to have gone to the EEC Hluthi depot, where he was attended to by security personnel, who informed him that officers were not present as it was a Saturday. He was also told that other officers had infact gone to attend faults reported within the area. This response seemed to have angered the customer even more as he demanded to be allowed inside the premises to speak to ‘someone’.
While trying to address him, the customer then pulled a pistol at the security guards and threatened to shoot them dead.

“The customer complained that he had been without power for sometime. He wanted to go into the offices to speak to the officers but he was told that they were not present. That is when he pulled out the gun and threatened the security guards with it,” said a source privy to details regarding the incident. In fear for their lives, the security guards simply ran for dear life and left the customer there. After ensuring that the customer had left, they then proceeded to their workstation and later informed management about the matter. This incident happened just two months after another aggrieved customer chased away personnel from a company contracted to EEC, who had come to restore power at his home. This incident happened at a place known as Mangwaneni in Nhlangano.

It is said that this customer, a son to a prince, also had no power for some time and had reported the matter to EEC, who then dispatched a contractor company to assist.
However, when the personnel got there, they found the customer at home and he is alleged to have first went on a rant about being without power for an extended period of time, before also pulling a gun at the personnel.
