MBABANE – The brutally murdered SMVAF manager was not the initial target, but he died for his car.

Sifiso Ndaba, a Manager at the Sincephetelo Motor Vehicle Accident Fund (SMVAF), was killed on Saturday.
Ndaba was kidnapped while at his home at Mpolonjeni in the outskirts of Mbabane, later murdered and his body dumped at Sigombeni Mountains.
Police arrested three suspects, two of whom have been charged and were remanded in custody yesterday after they made confessions before different magistrate.

The two have been identified as Nyiko Cossa (22) and Benjamin Maziya (20).
The third suspect is a minor and his name did not appear on the charge sheet as he made his confession after lunch yesterday and is yet to appear with his guardian. He is aged 17.

When the three suspects were brought to court yesterday, Cossa made his confession before Principal Magistrate Fikile Nhlabatsi and Maziya made his confession before Magistrate Lenhle Zulu.

Confession

The 17-year-old suspect had to wait for his guardian to be present before he made his confession before Magistrate Sifiso Vilakati.
Cossa and Maziya informed the principal magistrate during their first remand yesterday that they would conduct their own defence when the matter went for trial.

During their confessions, Cossa and Maziya told different stories as they all pointed the eventual killing of the SMVAF manager to each other.
However, the narration of events leading to the murder of Ndaba were quite similar.

According to the suspects, they had a buyer for a stolen vehicle and they discussed it and agreed to steal any car from Mpolonjeni in Mbabane.
Before going to steal the vehicle, the three men informed the judicial officers that they went to visit a traditional healer, who would help cleanse them so they would be successful in their robbery.

After the cleansing, they headed to Mpolonjeni, where they blocked the road with stones on Friday night.
A vehicle drove by and had to stop due to the rocks that had been placed on the road.

The driver of the car alighted to remove the stones and that was when he was attacked.
Only one of the suspects was close to the vehicle and tried to attack the driver, but the driver overpowered him (suspect) and he ran into the bushes after which the motorist drove away.

Seeing that it was late and they had not accomplished their mission, the three suspects said they slept in one of the markets around the area.

Washing

In the morning, when they were looking for transport to ferry them to town, they passed by Ndaba’s homestead where a family member was washing his (Ndaba’s) car, an Audi model, which is the same vehicle that was later found to have been burnt. The trio informed the judicial officers that they then decided that they would try their luck and steal the vehicle.

In their confessions, they said they watched from a distance as Ndaba later drove out of the homestead.
It is believed that this was the time when he left to attend the Men’s Weekend Retreat at the Evangelical Church in Matsapha.
