MANZINI – Two Zionists have died after the unroadworthy Toyota Hilux LDV they were travelling in overturned.

The accident took place at Maphopheni in Mafutseni along Hhelehhele/Ngogola Public Road on Saturday at around 2:10am.
Information gathered from a well placed source was that there were 14 Zionists travelling in the car and they were going to a funeral around Siteki and five of them were fighting for their lives in hospital.

The source said Clifford Howard Mndzebele (30) of Mahlangatsha, who was driving the Toyota Hilux LDV with registration numbers HSD 842 BM, lost control of the car after one of its tyres burst and it overturned, injuring the 14 Zion church members.
The source said one of the Zion church members died on the spot while the other died while undergoing treatment at the Raleigh Fitkin Memorial (RFM) Hospital yesterday.

“All the passengers were injured and despite the two who died, five of them are in critical condition in hospital,” the source said.
Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Phindile Vilakati confirmed the accident and said the driver had been arrested and charged with culpable homicide and driving an unroadworthy car on a public road.
Later yesterday, the driver of the car, who had a bandage around his head, appeared before Manzini Senior Magistrate Sindisile Zwane where he was officially slapped with two counts.

According to the charge sheet, on the first count, Mndzebele was charged with culpable homicide in that on December 2, 2018 at 2:10am near Maphopheni along Mafutseni-Ngogola MR 3 Public Road, the accused person drove the car negligently and lost control of it before it overturned.

“Two passengers; Jabu Mathunjwa, a 31-year-old woman of Ngculwini and Thabisile Ngomane, a 38-year-old woman of Mahlanya were certified dead upon arrival at RFM Hospital,” read part of the charge sheet.
In the particulars of the negligent driving, the charge sheet stated that the accused person allegedly drove the car without due care and attention and failed to apply brakes on time. It was also alleged that Mndzebele failed to avoid an accident which a reasonable driver could have avoided.

In count two, the accused person was charged for contravening Section 50 (1) as read with 122 (4) of the Road Traffic Act 6 of 2007. It was said that on Saturday morning, the driver allegedly drove the aforementioned car on public road while it was unroadworthy. In the particulars of the unroadworthiness, the charge sheet alleged that all the four car tyres were worn out, had defective handbrake and worn out shock absorbers.
