PIGG’S PEAK – Having long hair is not allowed at Mhlatane High School. The school has a strict code which stipulates that hair should be at least styled to brush-cut and no hairstyles are permitted.

Throngs of pupils had their hair forcefully cut yesterday by teachers as a form of punishment for keeping it long.

However, the pupils were not happy with the ‘hairstyles’ left by the teachers who appeared to have been making unsightly shapes with their hair.
This left many of the pupils furious and complaining that they were humiliated in that they had to leave school for the nearest barbershops to cut their hair.
One of the pupils who had her hair cut claimed she had been writing a Maths exam at the time but was ordered out just when she was about to finish.
The teachers are said to have gone from class to class to cut the pupils’ hair.

“This is humiliating for us because we have to walk through town with this kind of hair,” one pupil said.
Another had a line made popular by Nelson Mandela in one of his photos taken during his prison trial.
Though some people made fun of the situation, others were not pleased.

The pupils also complained that they were not prepared to part with E10 each for a proper haircut.
Some of the pupils claimed they had to borrow some money from friends while others called their parents to assist.

“Why did they not tell us yesterday that we should come to class with short hair?” asked a pupil.
For barbershop owners, however, it was a bonus. “I was actually having a bad day and then suddenly there was over 30 pupils queuing,” said a barbershop owner.
