LUSHIKISHINI – Three men who were going after mature, beautiful dagga plants were assaulted by a dagga dealer, who chased after them with a hoe-handle, killing one in the process.

Information gathered in statements submitted in court is that the accused person, Thami Sicelo Mavuso (25) of Lushikishini, had been guarding his dagga fields with a torch when he saw three men walking towards where he was, carrying plastic bags and with the intention of stealing his dagga. When he saw them, he shouted and ran after them. one of the men, Sibusiso Nxumalo, tripped and fell, and Mavuso assaulted him using the hoe-handle. When he realised that he had severely assaulted him, Mavuso left Sibusiso in the mountains where the fields are located and headed back home.

Meanwhile, the two other men escaped and reported the assault incident to their relatives and police. One of the men, identified as Senzo Nxumalo, revealed that he was with Sibusiso when the incident occurred. he said prior to the incident, they had allegedly planned to go and steal the dagga at the suspect’s fields as it had already matured and was ready to be sold. “When we got to the fields, we saw a torch within the fields and immediately fled, dropping our bag in the process. While escaping, a man chased after us and Sibusiso fell to the ground. “We heard him screaming, however, we could not assist him as we also feared getting caught and being severely assaulted or killed. When I reached home, I received a phone call from him, informing me that he had been seriously injured and was dying,” Senzo said in the statements.

He added that Sibusiso insisted that he should be fetched from the mountains, however before he could even respond, his battery died. “We contacted the police, relatives and friends and all went up to the mountains. upon arrival there, we heard a snoring sound and when we got closer to where it was coming from, we found Sibusiso in a critical condition. He was severely injured on the head, face, neck and the injuries looked like a piercing object had been used to assault him. “The team of officers took him to a police van and he was immediately taken to Mankayane Government Hospital, where he died upon arrival,” Senzo added. He mentioned that they were then taken to Mankayane Police station where statements were recorded. Meanwhile, the accused person’s mother is alleged to have later contacted private investigator Hunter Shongwe who arrived at the place and investigated the incident, interviewing some of the people involved.

Shongwe, through the mother’s assistance, later managed to get hold of the accused person, who after he had been interviewed, was handed over to the police by the former. Mavuso, who is alleged to be remorseful of his actions, informed the police that he made a living through dealing in dagga. he added that he wished he would be afforded bail as his parents solely depended on him for a living. Yesterday, the accused person made a court appearance before Magistrate Philisiwe Simelane, where he was informed to make a bail application through the High Court. His charge sheet states that he had committed a murder offence at Lushikishini, near Ntendwane River, last Thursday, where he assaulted Sibusiso Nxumalo with the hoe-handle several times on his body.
