MANZINI – How safe are we from setups? This question emanates from fears and suspicions that an unlicensed gun was hidden in a small flower garden within the office premises of two of the country’s top attorneys - Mzwandile Dlamini and Sipho Gumedze.

Their offices are situated on Essex street in Manzini, opposite the Mandlenkhosi Building.
The gun, according to sources, was buried beneath the soil such that it was not going to be easy to make notice of its presence.
It has been established that the attorneys got to know about it when they were alerted by police officers who came to search the premises, understandably acting on a tip off. This happened on November 1, 2018.

Sources said about 20 police officers claimed to have received information that Dlamini had hidden the gun. This resulted in the search, which focused mainly on perusing files and opening drawers. However, they did not find it inside his office.

Investigations by this newspaper unearthed that their next move was to search the relatively flattened floral garden. It was flowerless.
It is said that police used certain sharp objects to dip the ground in the hope they would find the gun. The digging lasted for about 15 minutes. It was around 4:30pm when the exercise began outside the offices.

“Again, they did not find the gun,” a source said.
After satisfying themselves that it was neither in Dlamini’s office nor his flower garden, sources said police officers claimed the offices of his neighbour, Sipho Gumedze, should be searched as well.

Interestingly, the police did not search Gumedze’s office but went straight to his flower garden, to see if the gun was hidden there. After digging, which lasted for less than five minutes, they found it hidden beneath the soil, wrapped in sellotape and an unspecified material made of cotton.
This shocked Gumedze, his partners and support staff as they told police that they were seeing the gun for the first time.
