MANZINI – “We have no power to control churches when it comes to having condoms in their places of worship.”
This was revealed by the Council of Swaziland Churches during a press conference yesterday.

The council’s Chairperson, Bhekindlela Magongo, said there was no way they could control the churches and religious leaders who were for the idea of distributing condoms in the house of the Lord.

“However as a council, we do encourage prevention, including faithfulness and honesty, especially to those who are married. We also conduct referrals to health institutions for such services,” he said.

Meanwhile, Vice Chairperson Albert Thwala said the Ministry of Health had a duty and was given the task to distribute condoms and for now its outlets had not run out of space.

“The ministry has not approached anyone to voice out that it has run out of outlets to distribute condoms. People know all the outlets and they are sufficient for all members of the public to access,” Thwala added.

On another matter, the council congratulated His Majesty the King, the Queen Mother and the entire Eswatini Kingdom on a number of achievements in the year 2018.

These include the occasion of the nation’s double celebrations marking His Majesty’s 50th birthday and the Kingdom’s Golden Jubilee, the generally peaceful National Elections, the Sibaya People’s Parliament and appointment of the new Prime Minister, Ambrose Dlamini and entire Cabinet.

“We look with optimism to the future and trust that this new government will take up its task with a sense of duty and most importantly with the fear of the Lord,” Magongo said.
