DVOKOLWAKO – After a loud bang, residents who had been enjoying themselves near a waiting room rushed to the scene, only to discover that four people had been trapped and killed inside a vehicle.

This is the gory sight that met some residents of Dvokolwako on Saturday night.
Witnesses said upon arrival, it was discovered that a white VW Polo had veered off the road and rammed into a waiting room along the Dvokolwako-Mliba Public Road.

An employee of South Africa power utility, Eskom, one Sandile Zulu (31), his younger brother, Phinda Zulu (28), who was a student at Limkokwing University of Creative Technology and two friends, Sibusiso Ndwandwe (31) and Ntando Sangweni (21), were instantly killed when the accident occurred on Saturday at around 11:40pm.

Ceremony

Information gathered is that the four men had attended a relative’s lobola ceremony in the area and stayed there until it was late, before the accident.
Allegations are that they had been enjoying alcoholic beverages before they decided to embark on their journey back to their respective homes.

Residents found near the waiting room yesterday said they suspected that the Eskom employee lost control of the vehicle and it crashed into the waiting room.
They noted that the vehicle was damaged beyond repairs, especially in the front where the driver and passenger in the front seat got trapped inside. Personnel from the Fire and Emergency Services, together with the police officers had to be called so the bodies could be retrieved from the vehicle.

One of the passengers, who had a seatbelt on, was allegedly thrown out of the car, while the other was found lying at the back seat, already dead. “Although there are suspicions that they had been drinking on the night, the cause of the accident remains unknown. However, based on the extent of damage of the vehicle, speed was probably the main factor. We just have to wait for the police investigations to be carried out, as the vehicle  has been impounded for inspections at the Mliba Police Station,” a witness, who refused to be named, said yesterday.
