EMHLANGENI – Allegations of adultery have been fingered as the cause of the tragic incident involving an Old Apostolic Church priest and his wife.
The priest stabbed his wife countless times, killing her in the process before hanging himself.

According to family members, the couple, Sithembile Mavimbela (38) of Hluthi and Johannes Mbalati (56), would now and again engage in physical altercations, mostly related to allegations of adultery.
Distraught and traumatised family members were found at the homestead situated at eMhlangeni in Majotini, where the gruesome incident occurred on Saturday night.

Problems

The family members comprising the priest’s brother, Albert Mbalati, confirmed that the two were going through marital problems ever since the early years of their marriage, until the shocking incident occurred.

The Priest, Johannes, who was also a construction worker, was originally from Maputo, Mozambique.
However, he had acquired local citizenship and further acquired  land through kukhonta (customary method of obtaining Swazi Nation Land).
Meanwhile his wife, Sithembile, was employed as a housekeeper in one of the flats situated in Mobeni, Matsapha.

“We were aware of their marital problems, which were mostly caused by infidelity. We would have meetings as a family to discuss a way forward regarding these issues. Our brother had informed us about their problems and we were hoping they would be sorted, however, not in this manner,” a teary Albert said.
On the day the two bodies were discovered, on Sunday at around 2pm, the couple’s 12-year-old son, who was no longer staying with his parents, decided to go there after he had been informed that they were around.
