MBABANE – Social media predictions on the outcome of who would make it to Parliament have recorded a scoreline of above 70 per cent.

The list of the predictions, whose author remains anonymous, was circulated on WhatsApp on September 8, about 13 days before the Secondary Elections. It correctly predicted 43 out of the 59 winners of the elections. The predictions were as daring as their bold inscriptions in the social media platform that the predicted winners were even congratulated way before the actual voting day.

When the results of the Secondary Elections started coming through  on Saturday morning, comparison ensued on whether the ‘sibhalwetjeni’ (as the masked author preferred to call his predictions) prediction was correct and it emerged that of the 59 constituencies, 43 of those predictions were correct.
The author’s obvious misses, were the Siphofaneni Inkhundla upsets where Gundwane Gamedze was finally beaten by gospel artist Mduduzi ‘Gawuzela’ Simelane, ending the former’s previously uninterrupted 20-year reign in Parliament.

The social media predictions could not see coming the victory for ‘Rav 4’ Siphocosini MP Mduduzi Matsebula of Siphocosini over Bongani Dube, who had been tipped to win. At Ngudzeni, the prediction had pointed towards former EPTC Manager Charles Ndlovu, but he ended up losing to former MP Bigboy Mamba. A glance at the social media predictions reflect a high level of inaccuracy mostly in constituencies under the Lubombo Region.

The predictions missed the point at Siphofaneni, Matsanjeni North where Nkululeko Mbhamali was tipped over Phila Buthelezi; Joseph Souza was predicted to retain his position, only to lose to football administrator and businessman Ntsetselelo Magongo at Lugongolweni.

It also couldn’t foretell the coming of Sandla Fakudze at the newly-established constituency Gilgal, as the prediction said it would be Solomon Gwebu.
The Manzini region also proved difficult to predict for the anonymous social media author, as it could not foretell the return of Sibusiso Mabhanisi Dlamini, Thandi Nxumalo at Kwaluseni and Manzini South respectively.
