MANZINI – Yet another fully loaded Toyota Quantum has been involved in a near fatal accident, which saw over 15 people rushed to hospital.

The accident took place by the off-ramp at Nazarene traffic lights at about 3pm yesterday. Besides the Toyota Quantum, the accident involved two trucks and Honda CR-V.

Information gathered from eyewitnesses was that the a horse and trailer truck was in front of the three other vehicles and was already approaching the intersection joining the main road from Nazarene traffic lights towards Mavuso Trade and Exhibition Centre.

They said the Toyota Quantum kombi was coming from the drop-off zone while the Honda was following the horse and trailer truck. Since the Honda was following the horse and trailer truck, the witnesses alleged that the Toyota Quantum stopped to give way to it.
“However, a tipper truck, which was loaded with quarry stones, knocked the Toyota Quantum from behind. In the process the kombi smashed into the Honda and both vehicles hit the truck’s trailer,” the witnesses said.

Meanwhile, the sources said in a bid to avoid what could have been a nasty accident, the driver of the tipper truck tried to sway it to the other direction and it landed in the middle of the main road to Nazarene traffic lights. The sources said luckily there were no cars on the main road as the traffic lights had just turned green for vehicles moving from Mavuso to the traffic lights direction.
The witnesses said all the passengers, including the driver and conducor who were in the Toyota Quantum, were rushed Raleigh Fitkin Memorial (RFM) Hospital together with the driver of the Honda CR-V.  According to witnesses, one of the quantum passengers fractured a leg while another sustained minor injuries.
Manzini Police Station In-charge Traffic, Assistant Superintendent Siboniso Shongwe, who was found at the scene, confirmed the accident. He said four vehicles were involved and a number of people were rushed to hospital with serious and minor injuries.
On the same note, Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Phindile Vilakati also confirmed the accident. She said he police were still collecting information regarding the number of people who were injured. However, she confirmed that there were 15 people aboard the Toyota Quantum and they included the driver and the conductor.
It is worth noting that the accident took place exactly where two police officers were killed after a government water tanker truck, which they were travelling with presumably went out of control and plunged into a ditch. This accident took place on October 30, 2017.
