HLATIKHULU – A massive fire that erupted at a Hlatikhulu cardboard factory on Wednesday night is estimated to have caused about E4 million worth of damage.

Police have described the blaze as one of the biggest fire incidents to have occurred in the small town.
A source described as scary the sight of the inferno which reportedly engulfed the Chuan-yi Paper Factory’s entire premises, damaging a number of goods that were ready for the market.

The blaze triggered a massive rescue response from both members of the Eswatini Police Service and firefighters from Nhlangano, who reportedly dispatched several crews.

Hours

Witnesses said the fire took several hours to control and at one stage it was feared it would spread to nearby homesteads around Sibetsamoya location, where the cardboard making firm is located.
Firefighters, according to management, were forced to deal with the blaze for almost 12 hours, beginning from Wednesday 10pm up until around noon yesterday.

Even though massive damage was done, operations are still continuing.
It is suspected that the fire might have been caused by human element, as it was feared it might have been an act of sabotage.

Management hinted that at some point they had a misunderstanding with some people who raised certain grievances, which were being addressed.
“I am not saying they are the cause but my security reported to me that last week, he intercepted some people who were trying to burn the factory.
He said they disappeared into darkness, then the incident happened on Wednesday night,” he said.

According to a source, the fire broke out at around 10pm on Wednesday, where it caused a series of explosion and massive fireballs as two trucks that were also within the company premises also caught fire.
Information reaching this publication was that the fire started at the rear of the firm, and the security guard who was stationed at the premises on the night only noticed smoke and flames as the fire began to spread all over the plant.
