MANZINI – Just a week after her death, the paternal and marital families of Mary Maseko nee Gwebu are embroiled in a bitter war of words.
Mary is the deceased wife of New Covenant of Jesus Christ Ministries’ Bishop Enoch Maseko.

She died after ingesting a poisonous substance about a week ago. Mary’s brothers are alleging that the bishop ordered them not to attend the funeral unless certain things were fulfilled.

Speaking on behalf of the Gwebu family was Mfomfo Gwebu, the elder brother of the bishop’s wife, who said upon arrival at the Maseko homestead to pass their condolences and to further hear about funeral arrangements, unpalatable words were allegedly said to them.

“We were shocked by the way the Maseko family welcomed us. It all began when we left some money as offering. We were told that they did not need our money. They further told us that they did not want us to be part of the funeral service this weekend. This shocked us, especially because Mary was the only sister we had and we have to pay our last respects to her, it is a normal thing to do,” Mfomfo said.

He further alleged that the Gwebu family, comprising only brothers, were later asked to leave the Maseko homestead.
“As a family, we are saddened by the Maseko family’s actions as we do not have an idea what could have sparked this. We were accused of discussing the Maseko family issues with outsiders,” another Gwebu brother, Mfanawenina said.

The bishop, who is also a senior member of the Umbutfo Eswatini Defence Force (UEDF), when contacted, admitted there were certain unpalatable words that were exchanged between the Gwebu and Maseko families. However, he said the Gwebus knew exactly where all the misunderstanding emanated from.
“They know where all this is coming from and I told them that I needed them to return to my home with a certain family member who is responsible for all this.

Tinkhulumo letiningi tiyabafaka-I am currently in mourning yet people are alleging a lot of wrong things about my wife’s death. Ababuye naloyo muntfu lengitsite babuye naye (They should return to my family with the implicated person, so we resolve the issues we are currently faced with) and I need the media to be there too,” Bishop Maseko said last night.
