PIGG’S PEAK – August may be Women’s Month but it does not mean it is for women only.

This was the view of a male teachers who on Tuesday protected a woman from being harassed and verbally assaulted by a crowd at the Pigg’s Peak Bus Rank for wearing revealing clothing, according to them.
Terrence Mavuso is a teacher at a school in Bulembu, but last week Saturday, he helped save a woman from possible physical harm.

He is one of two men who stood up to the crowd, protecting the young woman from being harassed and assaulted .
The woman was wearing a skirt, which members of the public at the bus rank viewed as very short and demanded that she should cover up.
She had worn a skirt, which appeared to have only covered her backside from the waist, something that drew the crowd’s attention.

As the woman walked around the bus rank towards one of the public transport vehicles, some of the members of the crowd began to make nasty comments towards her. They asked her why she was walking around naked.
The woman did not respond and continued to walk as if unaware of the crowd.

Despite the woman ignoring the crowd, the voices demanding that she covered up became louder.
Some of the members of the public, including women then confronted her and she got into one of the Toyota Quantums, which was headed for Mbabane.
As she sat in the vehicle, the crowd continued to verbally assault and harass her with some demanding that she get out of the vehicle. It was at this point that Mavuso also entered the vehicle and sat next to her, in the process stopping the crowd from further attacking and harassing her.

Two men broke from the crowd and approached him, ordering him to get out of the vehicle but he refused.

Women nearby also could be heard demanding that the woman should get out of the vehicle.
Mavuso refused to allow this to happen despite threats that he would be forced out.
When asked why he risked his life, helping a stranger, the teacher said he remembered that South Africa was commemorating Women’s Month.
Considering the proximity of South Africa with Eswatini, he said it was as if the same was being commemorated locally.

“Imagine if something worse happened to her as the crowd demanded that she get out of the kombi.”
Mavuso said he could not have allowed that the woman be harassed especially because he was naturally against women abuse.
He said he was also reminded of the newly-enacted Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence (SODV) Act. Adding he said it would not have made sense that after fighting so hard to get the SODV Bill enacted, there were still people who were allowed to harass women.

The teacher said he ensured that the woman was safe until she dropped off from the Toyota Quantum, which was headed for Mbabane.
He revealed that the woman was shocked about the public’s reaction since she spends most of her time in South Africa.
The other teacher, Mbeketeli Fakudze quoted a biblical verse as he said ‘he who is without sin, should cast the first stone’.
Fakudze is not only a teacher as he is an R n B artist, his latest song being ‘Save my soul.
