MANZINI – A couple is lucky to be alive after their substandard rented flat caught fire and their belongings were burnt to ashes.
The fire is said to have been caused by a lit candle.

The incident took place on Sunday at around 11:30pm at Mangwaneni, a slum located in the outskirts of Manzini. The couple was inside the house when it caught fire.

They have two children aged five and two years old, but fortunately, the minors were not in the house when the incident took place. Information gathered was that the children slept at a day care centre.

Thulani Ngcamphalala (28), who is the head of the family, said had taken one too many when he returned to the house from watching the 2018 World Cup final match between France and Croatia.

He said upon arriving in the house, he found his wife sleeping and he lit a candle in order to sneak into bed without disturbing her. He said unfortunately for him, he fell asleep before extinguishing it (candle).
“I was awoken by the heat from the blaze and smoke which had filled the house. I woke my wife up while calling for help,” Ngcamphalala said.

He said some of their neighbours responded promptly and they kicked the door open and managed to pull them out of the burning house. He said they used the water which was in their house to try to put out the fire but they were unsuccessful as the water got finished while the blaze was still raging inside the house.

Ngcamphalala, who works for a construction company which specialises in building houses, said after running short of water, they rushed to a neighbour, who was situated about a stone’s throw, and requested that the use his tap in a bid to put out the fire.
“I think is because of that delay that they failed to take out some items before everything was reduced into ashes,” he said.
