MBABANE – Vision 2022 Ministries Eswatini wants special number plates for  senior citizens.

The executive director of the non-governmental organisation, Themba Magagula, said this would better the  country’s lives of senior citizens while they drove along the roads.
Like personalised number plates, these would also be the same colour so that other motorists can know not to rush them on the country’s roads.

Experience

According to Magagula, the number plates should start with QBE, which stands for ‘qualified by experience’. He has written a letter to the Ministry of Public Works and Transport with his proposal.
Magagula explained that his company would be able to help those senior citizens from 50 years and above.

All they had to do was pay the administrative fee to the company and all the work would be done for them to obtain the special plates.
“Those who come first will get a chance to have their birthdates included on the numbers if they so wish. The senior citizens will have to bring their identity document to prove that they are indeed over 50 years,” Magagula said, should his proposal pass.

He went on to mention that he had also applied from the ministry to have the elderly pay the E2 800 in three months for having the special number plates unlike regular citizens who have to pay it in a month.

Harassed

He went on to mention that it would make driving easy for senior citizens even when they are out of the country as they would be easily spotted and not harassed on the roads.

“Our mission is to ensure that the elder citizens are clearly identified on the public roads so as to warn other motorists and to ensure that other drivers remain responsible and understanding to avoid any road fatalities,” he said.
Magagula explained that the request was to reserve the prefix QBE solely for the use of Vision 2022 Ministries, which will be responsible for the application processing and payment of application fee to the Road Transportation Board (RTB).

He went on to explain that those who wished to contact him could call 7820 7875 or they could email him at vision2022ministriesswaziland@gmail.com. Their offices are based in Manzini. Magagula stated that they were aiming at registering 4 000 senior citizens.
