PIGG’S PEAK – A 48-year-old man is lucky to be alive after he was rescued from an angry mob which accused him of unsubstantiated allegations.

This was after he allegedly smeared a black greasy substance on two buses, including one belonging to former Ntfonjeni Member of Parliament (MP) Sifiso ‘Sompisi’ Magagula.

As the 2018 parliamentary elections gain momentum, some members of the public alleged that the incident was intended as an attack on Magagula because he is one of the people expected to contest under Ntfonjeni Inkhundla.

The man, who was assaulted by the mob, is known but his name will not be mentioned for ethical reasons.
It is alleged the man first went to a different bus similar to the one belonging to Magagula.

Hospital

The first bus was parked near the Pigg’s Peak Government Hospital away from the bus rank.
The man is then said to have been advised that he had smeared the  wrong bus and he then proceeded to the bus rank where he found the Sompisi Transport bus.

He then allegedly smeared the black substance on one of the tyres.
When he allegedly did this, he was spotted by one of the people at the bus rank, who approached him and asked what he was doing.
As he was about to respond, more people were called to the place where the man was standing.
Within a few minutes, the man was surrounded by a group of people.

Throngs of people gathered during this time and asked him what he was doing.
They accused him of performing an act which could not be substantiated. They also wanted him to explain what the black greasy substance was before he was forced to eat it. He ate the substance in full view of the crowd while others bayed for his blood.
They kept asking him what he wanted with ‘Sompisi’.

The style name ‘Sompisi’ is used for the fleet of buses owned by the former MP. It is also Magagula’s nick name.
As the crowd was questioning the man, some began to beat him.

He was slapped, kicked and trampled on as they asked him what he was doing in Pigg’s Peak.
“Nizoboshwa nine,” some shouted in a bid to stop the mob from attacking the man. Other transport operators at the bus rank then quickly intervened and ordered that he be taken to the police station.

The man was then escorted to the police station by a large crowd of people as police officers eventually intervened.
The incident left people very furious at the bus rank, who alleged that Magagula may have been targeted due to the elections.
Superintendent Khulani Mamba, the Chief Police Information and Communications Officer, confirmed that a man was assaulted at the bus rank.

He said no charges were levelled against the man but that an assault enquiry had been initiated.
Mamba said police officers were still investigating the matter.
