MANZINI – Newborn babies and their mothers could get injured anytime as the ceiling at the Raleigh Fitkin Memorial (RFM) Hospital labour-Maternity Ward is leaking and on the verge of collapse.

On Monday, water was running continually from the ceiling down the wall and there was a massive puddle forming on the floor, which was being gathered in drums and buckets.
The RFM Hospital’s labour Maternity Ward is one of the busiest wards where between 14 and 20 babies are delivered a day.

“The damage is going to be extensive and patients would have to be moved to other ward soon. Sometimes when it rains, the beds get soaked too. We have been assured that the administration was still working with the ministry to re-design the ward, however, for now, it would be better if they would get contractors to work on repairing the ceiling,” some of the concerned nurses said.

It appears that the ceiling was damaged  in previous years and also early this year. Reliable sources revealed that it was not just the Maternity Ward which was affected by this issue, but some of the wards in the hospital too. “We should never compromise in ensuring that hospital buildings are safe places where people get healed and not injured.

“It is also unacceptable for any woman to deliver in such conditions,” a woman who had come to give birth on Monday said.
Reliable sources revealed that the Ministry of Health was currently in talks with Micro Projects for a new design of the ward, however, such talks were allegedly put on hold for now as government is faced with financial challenges.
