MBABANE – “The minister must not test us!”This is a warning that has been issued by businessman Walter Bennett to the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Phiwayinkhosi Mabuza, following recent events surrounding the contract of Municipal Council of Mbabane Chief Executive Officer, Gideon Mhlongo.

According to Bennett, the minister should not push him and other ratepayers in the capital city to start talking about where he had been.
“Sesitawukhuluma,” Bennett said in vernacular, which means, “We will spill the beans”.

He did not dwell much on what they would reveal in the event they were pushed too far, but emphasised that the attitude by the minister of talking down the ratepayers and residents of Mbabane was way offside.

“He is a Cabinet minister but it does not mean he owns it. He must respect and listen to the people. He is clearly no longer respecting his position as a Cabinet minister. I would like to respect him but he must also do the same to the people,” said the businessman.

He strongly criticised the minister’s statement to the effect that an argument by councillors that the CEO’s salary was no longer affordable was not justified.

“How can he, of all people, say that the salary of the CEO is justified by a balance sheet of the council? I wonder if he understands what he is talking about,” Bennett said.

Expanding, Bennett said if all government departments and parastatals would consider balance sheets when discussing salaries of management a lot would go wrong.
