MBABANE – His dream of being an architect was shattered after three of his fingers were cut off by a machine during a 2016 Junior Certificate (JC) practical exam.

This is the poignant story of a former Form III pupil of Mater Dolorosa (MDS) High School, who had  three of his fingers cut off by an alleged faulty machine while doing his practicals.

The pupil, Siyabonga Sibandze (17), is now demanding E1 million from government as compensation for the loss of his fingers. The claim against government has been filed at the High Court by his father Kevin Ntokozo Sibandze. Siyabonga is currently doing Form II at Manzini Nazarene High School, as he also failed his JC examination. In his particulars of claim, Siyabonga stated that in or October 2016, during his practical examination, as part of the requirement of the Junior Certificate Examination, he had to do a woodwork project.

He alleged that during the course of the project, he was allocated a faulty machine, which had been defective for a long period. According to the pupil, the authorities of MDS were aware that the machine was defective.
“While cutting a piece of wood in fulfilment of my practical examinations, the faulty machine cut off the three fingers on my right hand, due to the negligence of the school,” reads part of the particulars of claim filed by Siyabonga’s father.

The pupil further highlighted that during this period, he was made to immediately try to use his left hand in order to complete his examination.
