MBABANE –  Out of a population of 330, only 29 have an income of more than E2 000 per month.

The population is the total number of people who live on the portion of Farm 319 which is legally owned by the Swaziland National Provident Fund.

This was revealed by the Swaziland Commission on Human Rights and Public Administration in a report submitted to court.
The commission stated that while dealing with the matter, they identified a few issues that were essential for consideration by the court.

Illegally

The commission said the court should consider that the land illegally occupied by the residents measured approximately 13.4565 hectares, a 0.0035 percentage of the property.

The commission alleged that even with well intentions and efforts, the socio-economic status of the majority of residents contributed to the challenges, in adhering to the agreements for the repayment plan.

The commission, in their socio-economic status report concluded that residents of Madonsa were indigent people who relied on other family members for their livelihoods.

“Out of the population of 330 people, only 33 per cent of those within the employment bracket have jobs, and only 31 per cent have an average monthly income of E2 000 per month,” the commission stated.
It was also revealed that 33 per cent of the population accounted for children, with 81 per cent attending school and 19 per cent being infants.

The commission also alleged that 61 per cent of the households had formal structures which were characterised by modern structures built from cement and blocks, and a majority of the households did not have alternative houses to use in case they were evicted from their current homes.
