SITEKI – It’s jobs galore at newly-opened JS Clothing (PTY) Ltd in Siteki. The textile factory, which has replaced Kang Fa Textile, which shut down early this year, has advertised vacancies for 800 people.
By Wednesday at noon, the company had already employed 220 people, which means that there are still vacancies for 580 people.

Surprisingly, there is no mad rush for the jobs availed by the company in spite of the high unemployment rate in Siteki and surrounding areas.
As such, the company has put up posters around Siteki town, encouraging people to apply to fill the vacancies.

The company Director, Iqbal Mohammed, revealed that their projections indicate that they would have employed close to 1 000 people by the end of the year.
The Mauritian national, who is based in Durban South Africa, said the company required a large workforce in order for operations to run smoothly. “Right now, we are renovating and installing new equipment. Work (producing clothing) has already started and we still need more people,” he said.

The apparent lack of interest showed by people of Siteki in applying for the available vacancies at the new company could be due to the instability and alleged poor working conditions at JS Clothing’s predecessor; Kang Fa textile.
However, Mohammed maintained that the new company would provide improved working conditions and it would not lay off workers now and again, as it was the case with its predecessor.
“We are a big company, we are big in Durban. We are not going to close down,” he said confidently.

Mohammed said the company already had many orders from local clothing retailers.
As such, he said they had purchased sophisticated sewing machines and other equipment to enhance their efficiency.

On top of that, he said they had roped in supervisors from South Africa, Malawi and Mauritius.
When asked whether the company would tap into the USA market, courtesy of AGOA, Mohammed said for now they would concentrate on the local and the SADC market.
