SIMUNYE – The South African man, who was nabbed at the Lomahasha border Gate trying to smuggle minerals and drugs into the country, has been fined a total of E12 444 000 or five years imprisonment.
However, Simunye Magistrate Musa Nxumalo was lenient as he ordered Julius Mostert (38), who is from Pretoria, to pay E5 000 cash for his freedom.

The magistrate explained that: “The balance of the fine and the custodial sentence is suspended for a period of three years on condition that he is not convicted on a similar offence within this period.”
Mostert was arrested together with his wife, Joani-Stasja Meiring (36), who also hails from Pretoria, but she was set free shortly before trial after prosecutors informed the court that they were dropping all charges against her.
This was after Meiring had pleaded not guilty to all the charges she was facing.

The couple was driving in a Silver grey VW sedan registered CH 32 GZ GP when police manning the border found the minerals and the drugs hidden inside the vehicle.
According to court papers, police found in the vehicle 12 pieces of silver weighing 3.666kg valued at E26 009 and five pieces of gold weighing 3.74kg valued at E2 042 901.

Court papers further reflect that police found 0.047kg of dagga in the vehicle and another drug called ‘black ball hashish’ weighing 4.44 grammes, with a street value of E360.
Mostert pleaded guilty to all five charges and the court found him guilty in all counts.
For count one, two and three, he was sentenced to one year imprisonment with on option of a E10 000 fine.
