KAOHSIUNG, TAIWAN – Emaswati studying in Taiwan could not believe their ears when a banker announced he would help them get internships that could lead to jobs in Taiwanese companies.

This, it was announced, would pave the way for Taiwanese businesspeople to establish branches in the kingdom and the successful graduate interns could serve as partners in the companies.
“Taiwanese people know how to do business and look for opportunities in other countries, but they don’t often know the country well, so you are going to be their eyes and ears in these businesses,” said Tommy Lin, the Vice President of Hua Nan Bank in Taiwan.

Lin made this pledge to a deafening applause in the presence of His Majesty the King and EmaSwati students yesterday evening during a dinner hosted by the bank at Eda World in Kaohsiung.
The event coupled as a meet and greet event where EmaSwati students got an opportunity to dine with His Majesty the King, who is on a working visit in Taiwan that concludes today. There are close to 300 students currently studying in Taiwan in various universities.

The King extended the country’s gratitude to the bank for hosting the dinner and to Lin for committing himself to his pledge. This is the bank that offered Prince Buhlebenkhosi internship during his International Business and Trade studies for which he graduated with a Bachelors Degree on Saturday at Shih Chien University.

Addressing the gathering, His Majesty challenged the students to use the theory and practical experience offered in Taiwan, a First World country, to transform the kingdom.
“We look to you to grab this opportunity with both hands and return home to play a leading role in our quest to become a First World country. You have studied in a first world country, now you will work in it to gain experience in one. This augers well for our National Vision 2022 aspirations,” he said.

The King encouraged the students to make use of the science and technology parks given the high tech education they are receiving in Taiwan, a country that is renowned for its technological advancement and successful science parks.

Internship

Banker Lin said: “Today I want to announce the official kick-off of the international internship programme for your country. In the past, the students would come to Taiwan, learn and go back to home. What we want to do is to give everyone of you and opportunity to have an experience with a Taiwanese company in any field you want.”
Explaining how it would work, Lin said the students would be afforded an opportunity to work one hour or several hours a week. All the students have to do is to send their resumes to the Eswatini Embassy and he would then help them get a job or an internship.

“We are doing this in the hope that one day, when you have an internship there, when you graduate, there will be a job waiting for you. The rationale is very simple; Taiwan is a small country, 23 million, but we are able to compete in the world because we do things differently, innovatively and creatively.
“Everybody knows the story of David and Goliath. David could not compete with the giant hands on so he used a sling shot and we are going to give you that sling shot to survive in the world,” said Lin.

He said if every student worked hard during internships, did well in their studies and goes back home to make a difference, he would write a recommendation for every one of them and be a reference for every single one of them.
“I will do this  so that one day, when you graduate, perhaps the company owner would be happy to go to the Kingdom of Eswatini and have a partner,” he said.
