DVUDVUSINI – In a shocking incident, an elderly woman in her 70s was allegedly murdered ruthlessly by her son with a pickaxe.

The incident allegedly occurred while some of the residents were returning from a funeral service in the community of Dvudvusini-Ekuthuleni, near Mankayane at around 9am. The 32-year-old suspect (name withheld as he has not yet appeared in court) had brutally killed his own mother by allegedly hitting her with the pickaxe on the forehead and at the back of her head. Community members were passing through the elderly woman’s homestead when they heard her screaming saying, ‘Inyandzaleyo’-loosely translated ‘Help!’ As most people feared the self- proclaimed former soldier, due to his allegedly  violent behaviour, it took them a while to gather themselves and have the courage to go to the homestead. However, they eventually entered the house, where the woman stayed and where she had raised her nine children. Upon entering the house, they were met with a pool of blood where the elderly woman laid with the pickaxe placed on top of her bloodied body.

Family members also revealed that when her body was discovered, she was facing down and still carrying her cellphone in her right hand, which was proof that she died while trying to call for help. The elderly woman’s eldest son said their mother had a gaping wound on the forehead and also at the back of her head. He narrated how his younger brother started allegedly being violent from when he was attending primary school until he eventually dropped out. “He has always been a violent person, when he was still attending school, he would be expelled because of his violent behaviour and changed schools. He dropped out as he had started stealing people’s items and smoking too. “While he was growing up, he smoked dagga a lot and would commit crimes, the police would be called and he would be taken to the psychiatric hospital for evaluation and treatment.

“However his condition worsened as he became more violent and started shouting and further assaulting our mother,” the elder son said. He added that each time the suspect would physically abuse their mother, they would be called and upon arrival, he would attempt to assault them too. He mentioned that the police frequented his home and they would take the suspect to the police station before the psychiatric hospital for mental evaluation. “Before this incident, my mother would mention that the suspect would eventually kill her. We also suspected that and we were also scared that he would get killed by members of the community due to his behaviour. “He had been away from home for a while and had just returned when the incident occurred. We have been informed that he went to a nearby homestead to get the pickaxe. After that, he headed straight to my mother’s house and broke the locked burglar door before vandalising the main door, forcing his way inside,” he said.
