MBABANE – Cars manufactured before 1986 will soon be grounded.

This follows an announcement by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Energy that Lead Replacement Petrol 95 (LRP 95) was being phased out. This is one of the two types of petrol provided in the country, the other being Unleaded petrol 95 (ULP 95), which will continue to be available.

The ministry’s Principal Secretary, Winnie Stewart, issued a press release yesterday announcing that the company supplying this type of petrol would stop doing so on June 1, 2018.

Stewart shared that assessments by vehicle associations revealed that vehicles manufactured post 1986 were well capable of using unleaded 95 without any adverse effects.

Stewart said the reason for this was that the demand for this kind of petrol had significantly declined over the years as older vehicle models were replaced by new ones which used unleaded petrol. She explained that this led to the downscaling of its production by oil refineries which then made it scarce.

She stated that most refineries were no longer supplying it and the one that did had indicated that it would stop in about two weeks.
The move to phase-out this petrol seems to be for a greater good. “The public is humbly requested to note that markets are shifting towards supplying cleaner fuels, and this aligns well with the motor vehicle industry that is introducing vehicles that require cleaner fuels,” Stewart said.
