KALANGA – Three people died on the spot and several others were seriously injured when two Toyota Quantums collided at Kalanga area near Siteki on Monday morning.

The accident occurred near Budvodza Abukhulelwa Bus Stop, along the pothole-riddled Lukhula-Big Bend Public Road (MR16).
Two of the deceased have been identified as a Mozambican male and the other as a Zimbabwean male.

However, police provided no further details about the deceased hence their full particulars, including names, age and occupation, could not be ascertained, at the time of compiling this report.

The third victim was identified by the police as a Swati woman, who hails from Mpolonjeni area near Siteki.
According to Chief Police Information and Communications Officer, Superintendent Khulani Mamba, the accident occurred at about 6:30am.

Rushed

“Both drivers were critically injured and were rushed to Good Shepherd Hospital where they were admitted while three passengers were seriously injured and were confirmed dead on arrival at the same institution. Thirteen passengers were admitted,” he said in a press release.

Meanwhile, some of the surviving passengers said the accident occurred due to the bad state of the road.
They also blamed both drivers for speeding.

“Our kombi moved from its lane into the other one to avoid the pot-holes. However, when the driver realized that there was another kombi coming, it moved back to its lane. The other kombi then moved into our lane and our driver quickly moved to the other lane. The other kombi also moved to our lane hence there was a collision,” said Sifiso Dlamini, who fractured one of his legs and further injured the other.
