MHLANE – Over 100 police officers yesterday engaged in a search for a suicidal senior police officer, who disappeared from home on Monday after his salary and all his belongings allegedly got burnt.

The officer, *Sergeant Mduduzi of Matsapha Police Station (Esigodvweni), has been allegedly having problems most of which emanated from muti allegations. The officer was eventually found yesterday on fire at about 2pm, 24 hours later, near Usuthu River at Siphofaneni, after he had disappeared from Matsapha Police Camp. The two places are about  50km apart. Traditionalists call the curse ‘Lubane’ and the officer’s wife, *Mary confirmed that they had been living a miserable life since August last year as everything her husband owned got burnt.

Disappearance

According to Mary, before Mduduzi’s disappearance on Monday, they went to the bank to withdraw a sum of E2 500, which when they got home, got burnt inside their vehicle. She revealed that while her husband tried to put out the flames on the women, Mduduzi got burnt on the stomach and sustained injuries. “Everything he owns gets burnt and in a strange way, from his clothing, his work uniform, shoes, food items and even the house we currently occupy at the police camp. When he withdraws some money, it all gets burnt. “This tends to frustrate him as he is the sole breadwinner in the family. We have tried to take him to prophets and pastors to be prayed for, however, he does not get any assistance. On the day of his disappearance, he said he was going to kill himself as everything he owned got taken,” Mary said. The wife also revealed that Mduduzi was seen by their children at about 2pm on the day, retrieving a rope from the house and leaving.

She mentioned that when she realised that her husband had left, she tried following him to the forests at Mhlane, where he normally goes during such similar episodes. Mary added that when she could not locate the officer, she went back home and further informed his superiors at the police station. “A search began and the whole night a team of officers went all over Matsapha, Mhlane and Phocweni, however he was not found. He always wanted to kill himself and several times he had been stopped trying to shoot himself with his service pistol or trying to hang himself inside the house. “He has nothing now, no clothing, no work uniforms and money, everything got burnt from the several mysterious fires. The only clothing he had was donated by church members, however, everything got burnt too last week,” a teary Mary added. She further mentioned that after trying to shoot himself with the service pistol, senior officers at the police station had to be roped in and they made a decision that he be transferred from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to another department. This was after he had been promoted to a sergeant.
