MBABANE – Being a Swazi student who relies on government funding continues to be a nightmare.

The evidence is shown in Swazi students who are studying in neighbouring South Africa and other countries in the Southern Africa region.

Government, through the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, has still not paid allowances for some.
The affected students are mainly those who have enrolled at the different universities for first year.

While they stress about the allowances continues, the students have to deal with landlords who are demanding rent.
Some of those studying in South African universities moved into flats at the end of January and have been struggling to pay rent.
Information gathered is that parents have found themselves in a difficult situation as their children inform them that the landlords were threatening to evict them if they did not pay the rent.

Just a few months ago, Swazi students were going through the headache of not getting study permits from the South African High Commission.

The issue was serious to the point where some of them had to spend nights sleeping on the floor at the New Mall, just to get the permits.
The need to spend colds nights at the mall’s floor was caused by that the commission’s office not only closed early but there was more frustration following that it only attended to a specific number of students per day.

Government was partly blamed for the scenario, as some students needed to present proof of payment before they could be granted the permits.

In the latest scenario, some of the frustrated students, who were interviewed by this newspaper, said they were disappointed with government and said they felt like it did not care about their welfare.
