MBABANE – Could one of slain businessman Victor Gamedze’s companies, MVtel, have benefitted from the issuance of tenders by SPTC through alleged corrupt means?

SPTC stands for Swaziland Posts and Telecommunications Corporation.
It emerged yesterday during the continuation of former SPTC managing director (MD) Nathi Dlamini’s trial on charges of contravening the Prevention of Corruption Act No.3 of 2006, that various allegations were made against the corporation.

Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) Chief Investigator Sipho Mthethwa took to the witness’ stand and testified that in 2009, there were numerous allegations of corruption at SPTC.

Mthethwa said several of the allegations regarded the operations of the telecommunications company. Dlamini was the MD at the time. According to the chief investigator, the allegations included the issuance of tenders to MVtel, among others.

However, Mthetwa pointed out that the focus of their investigations in 2009 was the issue of the formation of New Horizon Mobile Limited, allegedly by the former MD of the corporation.
New Horizon Mobile Limited, according to Mthethwa, would have performed the same functions as SPTC, notwithstanding that there was no authority from Cabinet, Ministry of Information, Communications and Technology and the SPTC Board for its formation.

Dlamini was arrested on August 14, 2009 at around 8am, and his warrant of arrest was dated July 31 of the same year. He is alleged to have failed to furnish the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) with certified copies of correspondence authorising or approving the formation of New Horizon Mobile Ltd.
