KALUHLEKO – “We are ready to die for our land.” These were strong words uttered by some KaLuhleko residents who brought the inauguration of the area’s new headman (Indvuna) William Macondza Mangwe to a halt.

This was after Mangwe’s name was announced by KaLuhleko chief’s representative Linda Maseko yesterday at the area’s royal kraal.
The residents did not wait for Maseko to finish delivering his message from Chief Zulelihle, as some stood on their feet and started disowning the new headman, hardly 10 seconds into ‘office’.

One resident who was clad in traditional regalia with three feathers on his head, stood up and publicly stated that he did not know Mangwe and would not recognise him as headman.

The visibly unhappy man took steps towards where the new headman and other traditional authorities were seated, still stating his case.
He shouted that KaLuhleko residents had their own headman whom he said was a Zwane. He alleged that Mangwe was not a native of that area and did not know the issues affecting the people. He also contested that Mangwe did not even know KaLuhleko residents and wondered how he would be of service to people he did not know.

“No matter what you say, nothing will change, this is your new headman,” Maseko said. This sparked outrage as more residents joined in to support the traditionally clad man. “Wena wendlovu,” they shouted as Maseko attempted to continue addressing the meeting. Their unified voices, as they repeatedly chanted the phrase, made it impossible for other residents to follow what Maseko was saying. Police had to intervene as the meeting could not proceed.

“Iyaphi indlovu iyaphambili,” they chanted.
At least six police officers were spotted at the royal kraal, two of who were in their blue uniform, while others wore plain clothes.
