MANZINI – Pursuits by law enforcement agents on public roads have resulted in serious accidents and such high speed police chases have even led to the death of many motorists.

Yesterday, at about 1am in Fairview, a gruesome accident stemming from a police chase near popular hang-out spot, Mgcwembe, almost led to fatalities.

A police van with officers, however not from the traffic department, is alleged to have chased after a white Toyota sedan driven by a female, believed to be a popular Manzini Wanderers fan.

Information gathered from reliable sources is to the effect that the vehicle passed the police van, from the Fairview Police Post, which applied brakes and started following it.

Upon realising that the police were after them, the driver of the Toyota allegedly sped off, however, she lost control of the vehicle just after Mgcwembe and hit an electricity pole.

Members of the public, most of whom were having alcoholic beverages in nearby chill-out places, rushed to the scene when they heard a banging sound.

When they got there, they discovered that the people inside the vehicle were seriously injured and the car extensively damaged.
A security guard from a nearby popular joint was called and many people assisted in taking out the injured people. The driver, who will not be named for now, was believed to be dead as she was unconscious.

“After our suspicions that she could have been dead, many people became violent and started stoning the police vehicle. What infuriated us is that we knew the police had greatly contributed to the accident, but when they discovered that the car had lost control, they parked their vehicle far from the accident scene,” a source who preferred not to be named said.
