MBABANE – A trip to socialise and compete with fellow students from other universities in the region ended in tragedy for team Swaziland.

This was after members of the University of Swaziland Students Representative Council (SRC) were involved in a fatal accident, which claimed one life and left another admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU).

Two others were also admitted to hospital but their conditions could not be established at the time of compiling this report.
The accident is said to have happened in South Africa on Thursday night as the students were making their way back home from attending the annual Intervarsity Games, which were held in Gaborone, Botswana this year.

The deceased has been identified as Melusi Manyatsela Dlamini, who was the Mbabane Campus SRC Secretary, according to Swaziland National Union of Students.

It is said Melusi was travelling with UNISWA SRC President Sakhile Ndzimandze, Mbabane Campus SRC Member, Cebolenkhosi Dlamini and Mzwandile.

The accident was confirmed by both the university and the students’ union, the Swaziland National Union of Students (SNUS).
According to UNISWA Registrar Dr Salebona Simelane, they were informed about it on Thursday by their staff members who had accompanied the students to the intervarsity games in Botswana.

“Speaking about this particular accident, the students had acquired the car. We are told that accident happened between Pretoria and Rustenburg, that is where the students unfortunately met the accident. One of them lost his life,” he said.
