INYANGA ARRESTED FOR ALBINO MURDER IN SA

MBABANE – Barbaric! This word best describes the prevalent act of people who hunt down and kill people with albinism for ritual purposes.
Two children from Vosman, near Witbank, South Africa, one of them with albinism, were kidnapped and allegedly killed.

The minors were first kidnapped allegedly  by an inyanga (traditional healer), suspected to be a Swazi.
The kidnapping incident occurred on January 28, and the corpses suspected to be those of the two children were retrieved yesterday from different places in the Mpumalanga Province. The local traditional healer was arrested for the crime, and two other men, who could possibly be from the country, are on the run. The name and other particulars of the traditional healer have not been revealed as he is yet to appear in court.

According to reports from South African publications, Gabisile Shabani‚ 13‚ and her 15-month-old nephew‚ Nkosikhona Ngwenya‚ were kidnapped by three armed men who broke into their house in the still of the night. The children were sleeping in different bedrooms.

The family is reported to have said they suspected that Shabani was kidnapped because of her albinism condition. They also reportedly told TimesLIVE that they believed Nkosikhona had been mistaken for another toddler who was in the house at the time who also lived with albinism. Albinism in humans is a congenital disorder characterised by the complete or partial absence of the melanin pigment in the skin, hair and eyes.

Gabisile’s mother Anna Shabani told TimesLive that she had noticed a man watching her daughter as she walked back from school for several days in a row. She said she had neither seen the man in the area nor had she bothered to ask why he was loitering close to her home.

In the early hours of the fateful morning‚ Anna is reported to have woken up to the sound of glass shattering. She went to check and found that one window which did not have burglar bars was broken and before she knew it‚ there were three men inside her house.
